Russian Parliament believes international co-operation is necessary to speed-up submarine scrapping

In the end of June, Russian parliament presented a resolution urging the government to speed up the decommissioning of the obsolete nuclear-powered submarines as well as to provide the necessary funds, reports Russian daily Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

The parliament members stated that the most complicated situation with laid-up subs is in Murmansk and Arkhangel'sk counties. The federal governmental resolutions and programs have not worked, and the financing has been reduced from year to year. The parliament suggested that the government should cover all the yards' debts for the year 1996 within a month, involving decommissioning of nuclear-powered subs, and also provide regular funding for these tasks within the current year. The parliament has drawn out directions aimed at commercial companies to involve them in the submarine decommissioning.

The parliament also stressed that international co-operation is welcome, to reach agreements with other countries on a governmental level.
